Colin the Elf, or, "The Clyde Giant"
part 2
One day, when Mags came home from town with her shopping trip she had very important news for Colin.
The people that lived in Port Glasgow were going to run in to the hills and hide as they were very worried because they had heard the news that the fighting men of Arran were planning to sail up the River Clyde, invade Glasgow and take all of their land.
“That’s not right” said Colin, “we can’t hide, we must stop these fighting men of Arran from invading Glasgow”.
Colin sat down with all of the books about spells, he read every spell, it took him every day and every night for a whole week, but he could not find a spell that helped them.
“We need a town meeting”, said Colin, and he made a big poster and asked Mags to put it on the town notice board.

Because Colin was very small and had a very small voice he knew that he would not be heard, or, even seen at the meeting, he looked again at the spell books and found a spell that would make him the same size as everyone else.
All of the people of Port Glasgow were at the meeting, but just sitting and saying nothing.
Mags stood at his side and whispered, “You wanted to help people Colin, now is your chance”
Colin walked to the front of the hall and all of the eyes looked at him, he was feeling very nervous.
Colin said, “People of Port Glasgow, our friends in Glasgow are going to be attacked by the fighting men of Arran, we must help them if we can”
“How do we do that?” came a voice from the gathered crowd.
“I don’t know” said Colin, “ we need a plan and someone to lead us”.
“You make a plan and lead us” said the voice.
Colin was a little scared, but he said, “Meet me here in the Town Hall tomorrow and I will tell you my plan”.
Colin walked down to the harbour and sat down to try and think of a plan, suddenly there was a large splash from the river and Digby was there.

Colin told Digby of his problem and the two of them were thinking for a long time until Digby announced, “I have a plan”.
Digby would take a man with a great long rope to the other side of the river, the man would then tie the rope around a big strong tree and Digby would bring the man back, the rope would be under the river and when the fighting men had sailed by lots of Port Glasgow men would pull the rope very tight and stop the ships from going back.
We will have another rope further up the river and when we pull that one tight they will be trapped.
“Great plan”, said Colin.
At the meeting the next day Colin told the people about the plan and everyone hurried away to collect all the small ropes to make in to two very long ropes.
Colin, with one end of a rope climbed on to Digby’s back and soon they were on the other side of the river where Colin tied the rope to a large tree.
All of this work had been very hard and had taken a long time, the people were very tired, they would tie the second rope tomorrow.

All of the people of Port Glasgow were fast asleep when suddenly the big church bell started to ring, the bell would only ring if there was a great emergency.
Everybody gathered in the town square, the news was bad, the fighting men were coming, the second rope is not ready, What can we do?
Colin said, “ I will find a way to stop them”, and he told all the men to go to the rope, “When their ships go past pull the rope up very tight”.
What could Colin do. He walked up the riverside to where the second rope should be, “I must do something to help”, he said to himself.
Suddenly he had an idea, he still had one of his elf wishes to use.
Colin wished that he could be one mile tall and very strong. There was a loud rumble, just like thunder, and his wish came true.
Colin lay down across the river, his head was on one side and his feet on the other. He had blocked the river.
The fighting men's ships came very fast, and many of them crashed in to Colin. The ships broke up and the fighting men were washed away.

Some ships had time to stop but they were trapped, they could not escape. The fighting men agreed that if they were allowed to go home they would never fight again.
Poor Colin, he had lots of pain where the ships had crashed in to him, he was very tired because he had worked all day and not had any sleep.
Colin was now very very tall, there would be no beds big enough for him in Port Glasgow, and he just wanted to sleep.
Colin is still sleeping.

Go to Port Glasgow and look across the river, you will see what is now called, "Dumbarton Rock".
Colin is inside, still asleep, but he is waiting.
If any invaders sail up the River Clyde, just call his name. He will be ready to help.
